St. Patrick's Day commemorates the death of St. Patrick, Ireland's patron saint. With parades, special dishes, music, dancing, drinking, and a lot of green, the event has evolved into a celebration of Irish culture.

He was kidnapped at the age of 16 and sent to Ireland as a slave from Roman Britain in the late 4th century. He managed to flee, but he returned in 432 CE to convert the Irish to Christianity. He had founded monasteries, churches, and schools by the time he died on March 17, 461. Many tales arose around him, such as that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and explained the Trinity using the shamrock. Religious services and feasts were held across Ireland to commemorate his birthday. On Thursday, March 17, 2022, Saint Patrick's Day will be observed.

St. Patrick's Day became a mostly secular occasion of revelry and celebration of all things Irish thanks to emigrants, notably to the United States. The most lavish festivities, which included elaborate parades, were held in cities with large numbers of Irish immigrants, who typically controlled political influence. The first St. Patrick's Day parade was staged in Boston in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762. Since 1962, the city of Chicago has turned its river green to commemorate the event.

(While blue was previously associated with St. Patrick's Day, green is now widely associated with the day.) Irish and non-Irish people equally regularly participate in the "wearing of the green," which involves donning green attire or putting a shamrock, the Irish national plant, on one's lapel. The event is linked with corned beef and cabbage, and beer is occasionally tinted green to commemorate the occasion. While some of these behaviors were later adopted by the Irish, it was mostly for the advantage of tourists.
